Doctor of Science

Dr. Ann Elizabeth Duggan is the only Atlantic Canadian who has completed multiple missions with the Medecins San Frontieres (MSF) or Doctors Without Borders. The organization received the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. Duggan was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa by Saint Mary's.

Dr. Duggan was born and raised in Newfoundland, and spent the last two years working in Halifax at the Northend Community Health Centre. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Ottawa and a M.D. from the Faculty of Medicine at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario. She completed her family practice residency at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. Five years ago, she was awarded a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in England.

Dr. Duggan has worked on almost 20 MSF missions over the last decade. Her work has taken her to dozens of countries in turmoil and often placed her in very difficult and dangerous situations. For instance, she has worked as the medical coordinator on a number of occaisions in Sierra Leone, Africa she undertook a health needs assessments in El Salvador during Hurricane Mitch and Jakarta, Indonesia during the 1998 riots. Last year she traveled to Macedonia and North Sudan. Her work in Canada has focused on Family Practice in rural/isolated areas including the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. She recently began a program of study at the Harvard School of Public Health, which leads to a Master of Public Health degree.
