John George Flemming, Jack, was conferred an honorary doctorate of science from Saint Mary's in recognition of his distinguished record of professional, community and philanthropic service in Nova Scotia.
Flemming, a native Haligonian and Saint Mary's High School alumnus earned a diploma in engineering from Saint Mary's in May 1959 and a Bachelor of Engineering, Mechanical, from Dal-Tech in 1962. After working in the road building business for twelve years, he established his own firm Ocean Contractors Limited. Today, he continues to serve as President and CEO of the Ocean group of companies. Flemming has served as President of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia and in 1999, he was awarded the Association of Professional Engineers Gold Award which recognizes exceptional achievement to the practice of professional engineering.
In addition to Flemming's successful business career he has had a long and distinguished involvement with his community. He has been active on numerous boards, committees, and Atlantic Canadian organizations for over 30 years. One of the organizations that have benefited from Flemming's contributions is Bonny Lea Farm. Flemming is chair of the development committee for Sisters of Charity, Halifax and the Flemming Charitable Trust and is a long time and active supporter of the Halifax YMCA. Flemming is a current member of the executive committee of the Dalhousie University Board of Governors. He has acted as a member of the Board of Governors at Mount Saint Vincent University, The Board of Directors of the IWK Health Centre and Atlantic Blue Cross Care. Each year, a Saint Mary's student benefits from Flemming's generosity as the recipient of the Monsignor Murphy scholarship created in memory of his wife Marion?s uncle.
