Born in Genoa, Italy, Professor Codignola married his wife Gabriella in 1976, they have one daughter, Federica. Professor Codignola and his family currently live in Italy where he is a Professor of the "History of Canada" at the Università di Genova. His University education began at the Università di Roma, where he received his Laurea in Modern History (Magna Cum Laude) in 1970, and four years later his Master of Arts degree in History from the University of Toronto.

Professor Codignola began his teaching career at the Università di Bologna and has also taught at the Università di Pisa. He has had visiting professorships and research fellowships at several institutions including London, McGill, York, Laval, Toronto, Montreal and Brown. In 1988 he received the Northern Telecom Five Continents Award in Canadian Studies and was awarded by the Government of Canada, the Prize of the 25th Anniversary of the Programme of International Canadian Studies at the Department of Foreign Relations and International Trade in 2001.

Currently he participates in the Canada Research Chairs Program, as a member of the College of Reviewers, which administers $900m (Canadian) invested by the Government of Canada to support the establishment of 2,000 Canada Research Chairs in Universities across Canada by 2005. He is also a Member of the Editorial Board of the Collection "Canadian Studies / Ètudes Canadiennes" of Presses Interuniversitaires Européennes / Peter Lang, directed by Serge Jaumain. The Author of several works, his latest is Vatican. Archives of the Sacred Congregation "de Propaganda Fide", Finding Aid no. 1186, Calendar of Documents Relating to Canada in the Archives of the Sacred Congregation "de Propaganda Fide" in Rome, 1831-46 (Ottawa: National Archives of Canada, 2001), microform edition. He also has written several articles in Italian and English. Professor Codignola is currently researching the history of Reverend Edmund Burke, the founder of Saint Mary's.
