Paul M. Tellier was conferred an honorary doctorate of commerce from Saint Mary's for his years of public service and volunteerism.
Born in Joliette, Quebec, Tellier graduated from the University of Ottawa and Oxford University. In 1963, he was admitted to the Quebec Bar. During his tenure as a civil servant Tellier served in many positions, including Deputy Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Deputy Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources and Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet of the Government of Canada.
Tellier is a Director of Alcan Aluminum Ltd., BCE/Bell Canada, Bombardier Inc., and McCain Foods Limited. He has held directorships with Canada-Japan Business Council, Conference Board of Canada, Grand Trunk Corporation, Association of American Railways Association of Canada. Tellier was Chairman of the Conference Board of Canada. The 1995 Governor General?s Canadian Study Conference and the Centraide Campaign of Greater Montreal also benefited from his leadership.
Tellier?s many awards and distinctions include Railroader of the Year, Railway Age (1997), Grand Montrealais (1998), Canada?s Outstanding CEO of the Year (1998) and Business Personality of the Year Award, Journal les affaires (2000).
In 1990, he was presented with the Governor General?s Outstanding Achievement Award and in 1993 was appointed Companion to the Order of Canada.
Tellier has been the President and Chief Executive Officer and a Director of the Canadian National since 1992.
