Dr. Myles McCallum is a Roman archaeologist employed at Saint Mary's in the Department of Modern Languages and Classics, of which he is currently chairperson. He received his BA from the University of Alberta and his MA and PhD from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. He studies the Roman economy, archaeological ceramics, ancient urbanism in Italy, the Roman countryside, Roman imperialism, and imperial properties, and he has published widely on these topics. This research has been aided through SSHRC Standard Research Grants and, currently, a SSHRC Insight Grant, which funds excavations and student training in archaeology at a Roman villa site, the Villa of Titus, located in the Apennines northwest of Rome. He is also a co-editor of the journal of the Classical Association of Canada, Mouseion, a position he has held since 2009. He is currently working on an edited volume, to be published by Cambridge University Press, on urban trajectories in Italy during the period of Roman conquest and consolidation, and the final excavation report for the site of San Felice (a Roman imperial estate in southern Italy). With colleagues from the United States and Italy, he recently has been studying the archaeology of contemporary migration in Europe and the application of archaeological method to the study of the contemporary world.
He teaches courses on Roman history, archaeology, art, and culture, as well as Latin.
