We maintained some social activities for members, including 4 lunches at local restaurants, and our end-of-summer party, held this year at a member's house on Grand Lake, which included shared food, drink and live music (40 some in attendance). We had a financial seminar at a downtown hotel, also an annual event, with time for refreshments and conversation. We also had several public presentations on a variety of topics, including the poet Elizabeth Bishop; the city of Halifax as depicted in film beginning with the early 20th century; and MP Megan Leslie on her experiences in the House of Commons. We did jointly host, of course, last years meeting of CURAC Atlantic, together with ADRP (Association of Dalhousie Retired Professors) in October, which included about forty participants from across Atlantic Canada and elsewhere. We have been involved also, at the request of the University, in organizing remembrance events for members and former colleagues who have died. Unfortunately these occasions seem to be getting more numerous. In past years, we have reported that our relations, paradoxically, had been more positive with the university administration than with the faculty union. This situation may be changing, for the better. At Saint Marys, although retirement is mentioned in our collective agreement, there had been no consideration of the needs and lives of retirees, although pensions, of course, are provided for. There is a reference to Emeritus status, but no provision for continuing health insurance or other benefits. But this year we finally received a response from SMUFU to one of our letters in the form of a meeting between the SMUFU President and several representatives of SMURA. At this meeting some of our concerns were discussed. These included: the need for medical insurance; possible membership or representation in the faculty union; the lack of teaching opportunities for retirees; and a reconsideration of the emeritus designation versus a senior scholars concept. On the plus side, SMURA continues to have a room on campus for the use of retirees, which include desks, chairs, a computer (recently updated), book shelves, etc., in reasonable proximity to the library. Still under discussion are problems of parking and use of other facilities, including recreation and the Novanet library system. Changes to retirement: Retirement is of course no longer mandatory at age 65. However, after age 62, faculty can apply for reduced duties status, and receive proportionately less pay. Also a retirement incentive program has been agreed to, under which faculty who retire at 65 years receive a lump sum, with declining incentives for faculty 66 and 67 years of age. In the year 2012-2013, SMURA proposes to: Expand the base of paid members. Hopefully this will both give larger audiences at special events and give us more cash to fund our activities. Become more involved in the activities and meetings of CURAC. We should strive to send at least one representative to the next annual CURAC conference. 3. Do more to support and promote retired faculty who are actively involved in research. 4. Of course we will continue our on-going program of social and cultural events for members.
