Political science is a compelling and wide-ranging field, because our lives are affected by politics every day, and in a variety of ways. Politics include not only the activities of governments and formal political institutions and actors, such as legislatures, political parties and leaders, but also the political forces in society, in our everyday lives, such as values, norms and social relations. Because politics is about power. The discipline of Political Science explores how power operates in these broad and ever-changing political realms. Political scientists draw on a variety of research methods to ask questions that are often interdisciplinary in nature, addressing social, economic, cultural, historical, geographical forces. The study of Political Science combines both theory and practice, which helps us to both think about, and act, in the world.
The Political Science Program at Saint Mary’s University, which offers Honours, Major, Minor and Concentration options. Our faculty are experts in areas including Canadian politics, international relations, political theory, comparative politics, gender and politics, political economy, and research methods. The Political Science Program offers diverse courses focusing on democracy, social justice and inequality, conflict, security, and institutions. Our program inspires students to think critically and creatively, and to be politically engaged citizens. Our class sizes and student to instructor ratio fosters engaging discussions, a sense of community, and opportunities to learn from one another.
