Dr. Jason Rhinelander
is an assistant professor in the Division of Engineering at Saint Mary’s University. An expert in Artificial Intelligence, he focuses his research on applying machine learning and optimization to embedded, real-time system development – both in hardware and software.
Dr. Rhinelander specializes in using kernel machine algorithms for online machine learning, big data applications, and problem solving related to computer vision, signal processing, system optimization and extraction of knowledge from large data sets. His research area lends itself to a wide variety of applications, including underwater SONAR imagery for automated identification of objects on the seabed. He has completed industry applied research and development in the areas of offshore mooring inspection systems and supply chain demand prediction for retail goods; and is currently listed as a researcher for an upcoming project to provide data analytics support for underwater acoustic data. Working with his colleague, Saint Mary’s Computer Scientist Dr. Pawan Lingras, Dr. Rhinelander developed a traffic and weather condition prediction system for the Mackay Bridge using video from Nova Scotia Webcams. Collaborations continue with a project in Dalhousie University’s School of Occupational Therapy to develop advanced computer vision and machine learning techniques applied to group interactions.
Promoting Saint Mary’s and his students is important to Dr. Rhinelander. Each year, he spends time attending industry events to network with small and medium enterprises to discuss how research at Saint Mary’s can benefit their organizations. Since arriving at Saint Mary’s in 2013, he has taught courses in programming, engineering mechanics, engineering economics, electrical circuit analysis, and probability and statistics. He has also participated in Engineering Division activities, such as the annual robotics competition, and serves as the local chapter chair for the Computational Intelligence Society / Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). A dedicated teacher who focuses on engineering problem solving using a modern programming language, he strives to engage his students and communicate foundational engineering methodologies. In addition to creating an e-learning website for students and the public to learn how to program and obtain fundamental computer and technology skills, he is a mentor with the local Ladies Learning Code chapter for teaching python programming and a selection committee member for the Discovery Centre Awards.
