Outcomes and Appeals

An outcome is a remedy or sanction which is assigned to a student if they are found to be responsible for violating the Code of Student Conduct. Multiple sanctions can be imposed at the same time. 

Possible outcomes:

  • formal warning
  • apology to impacted party
  • reflective essays
  • community service
  • restitution for damaged property
  • loss of privileges or non-essential services
  • restriction from select areas on campus
  • meetings with support persons on campus or other educational and development activities
  • suspension or expulsion from the institution, in addition to other possible outcomes.

Appeals

Complainants and Respondents can appeal a decision by providing a written submission to the Chair of University Senate (or designate).  Submissions must include an explanation of the grounds for the appeal. Senate contact information can be found here.

Grounds for appeals include the following:

a. A significant error where the procedures outlined in this Code were not followed correctly;

b. Clear evidence of a significant conflict of interest on the part of a decision-maker(s);

c. The outcome is disproportionate with the precipitating incident(s); and/or

d. Significant new evidence that was not available at the time of the decision, which has the potential to change the outcome of the case.
