Teaching Resources

The Wicked Problems Lab offers problem-based learning activities for undergraduate and graduate students at Saint Mary’s. We focus on developing students’ toolsets which they may apply in a host of real-world situations, including data acquisition, management, and analysis.

Each of our labs, seminars, and other training resources explores one of the world’s wicked problems from multiple angles. Students are tasked with acknowledging the complexity inherent in many of the issues while posing questions for further discussion.

We offer:

  • Brightspace modules for introductory classes
  • Virtual lab sessions for upper-year classes
  • In-person activity-based learning in our lab for 20-25 students
  • Research assistance for students’ assignments and projects

Our learning modules for Brightspace include the following exercises:

  • Examining economic growth and energy demand using correlation analysis
  • Mapping the spread of Covid-19
  • Tracing landscape change through satellite imagery

Please let us know if you would like to integrate our resources into your courses. We welcome working with instructors to customize course materials to incorporate problem-solving and applied techniques to all undergraduate and graduate courses at SMU.
