Active Living

At InBalance Wellness we promote physical activity using the active living approach. When most people hear the term physical activity they think of exercise programs that are planned, structured, and done to improve strength, flexibility, or endurance.  However, active living is not the same as an exercise program. It is an approach that values and includes physical activity that is a part of everyday life. Active living means making physical activity part of everyday life, no matter what you do.

There are many opportunities to be active at work, school, home, and during leisure time. For example:

  • Household physical activity: vacuuming and gardening
  • Workplace physical activity: lifting boxes and taking the stairs
  • Lifestyle physical activity: carrying a basket at the grocery store instead of using a cart

Currently, only 15% of Canadian adults are meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week. Furthermore, Canadian adults are sedentary an average of nine hours a day. Adding just 10 or 15 minute bouts of physical activity into your day can make a difference!

To help you get started, we have launched an Active Living Campaign here at Saint Mary's. We will be updating this site with lots of events, programs, tools, and resources to assist you with adding more physical activity to your day.

Resources

Walking is a quick and easy way to add more physical activity to your work day. To make it even more convenient, we have created a booklet of walking routes around Saint Mary's Campus. The routes vary in distance so you can go for a short 15 minute walk on your morning break, or a longer 30 minute walk at lunch time. Switching up your route is a great way to keep things fun and fresh!

Click to view the routes around campus . If the route you walk is not included, feel free to share it with us.
